Thanks to tremendous support from Puget Sound Energy (PSE) and others, the dream of a residential "outdoor school" in the Baker Lake basin has become a reality. Developed by professional environmental educators in collaboration with classroom teachers, the Komo Kulshan Outdoor School hosts 8 sessions in Fall and 14 sessions in Spring.

The curriculum, designed for upper elementary students, also accommodates and supports a high school student component in a leadership capacity. Classroom teachers, after a pre-season training session, become the main field instructors, supported by professional Outdoor School staff on site and in the classroom. Base "camp" is located at PSE's handsome Baker Lake Lodge, and our classroom is right outside - the trails, streams and wildlands of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. (In addition, the facility is ADA accessible)

Focusing on the theme, "The Wonders of Watersheds", the multi-disciplinary program meets not only OSPI's Educational Learning Goals, but helps to fulfill the state's mandate in "providing environmental education at all grade levels". (RCW 28A.230.020 and WAC 180-50-115).

Program components include:

  1. Pre-season, in-service teacher training
  2. Pre-trip classroom lessons
  3. 2-1/2 days on site (M-W or W-F)
  4. Post-trip classroom lessons (assessment, extensions and evaluation)
  5. Printed materials (Teacher Handbooks, Student Journals, and High School Leadership Manuals)
There will be a comparable training for the High School Leaders, and we will rely on KKOS teachers to help nominate their HSL candidiates, but we will also be recruiting at Concrete and Sedro-Woolley High Schools for CSD and SWSD sessions. (2-4 per class) (Please note: The new teacher and high school leadership trainings for spring will be held in March/April and mid-Sept. for fall; these are mandatory for programmatic success!)

A number of Whatcom/Skagit/Snohomish County schools are fortunate to be involved in other excellent, residential programs, but our survey indicates that many of you are still unserved in this capacity for a variety of reasons; program availability, district support, and/or budget constraints.

In response to your interest, CARE's Komo Kulshan Outdoor School has invited you and your students to our program, limited to 22 classes annually that can make the commitment. And the cost? Due to a PSE grant (“Powerful Choices for the Environment” program, Energy Effeciency Services) generously covering lodging, and another grant covering program curriculum development and instruction, your school’s costs are… FREE!

We hope you can take advantage of this outstanding opportunity and look forward to hearing from you soon. For more information, please contact:
